Something a little bigger – 20mm Les Higgins

I’ve been Tweeting about my progress with these and have finally finished a unit! Towards the end of March is ShedCon 2018 – an event/game to christen the new Shed/Man Cave/Games Room of Essex Boy. To that end six of us will be gathering to play a large 20mm WSS(ish) game using mostly EB’s collection but with some supplemental stuff from Gary Phillips large collection. The last time we played was way back in…2014 at the first Framlingham gathering. An excellent weekend! Just for the game I painted up my ubiquitous Savage Swans in yet another scale and period!

These are altered Les Higgins figures done by EB and christened the ‘Yomper’! And I’m hoping to do another unit with this figure at some point…

Anyway, both EB and Gary have all the figures we need for the game but it seemed highly sensible with Ayton approaching in May that I should actually try and paint up a full brigade! I have one unit of Altefritzenburgers nearly done (using a different figure) and another one or maybe two to do. And unit of Irregular Miniatures dragoons. And a gun and crew. The dragoons needed dismounted versions so used a Les Higgins figure with the horse holder converted by EB. As a gentle start to get myself in the swing following painting all the tiny stuff I started with these…

These form part of what in the mid-C18th are Von Donovan’s Legion but will likely be brigaded with other units in the game as a ‘legion’ as such doesn’t really work in the game (using modified Rank and File rules). So they are started…

The gun crew are done and await the gun and limber…

And next up is to finish off the first Altefritzenburgers!

I’m rather enjoying doing these and it’s getting hard to not buy some more!!

Cheers for looking

More Poles and stuff…and coming up next.

Another batch finished.

First up my Poles needed some artillery support so three batteries of 2S1s with HQ. I think these are Skytrex models. Not huge amounts of detail but clean and tidy and paint up well. HQ stand are Scotia I think.

And the first lot of T-64s off  the line. Scotia models. Nice to paint. The BMP-1Ksh is a converted BMP-1 as I’ve run out of proper ones! Couple of bit of plasticard added to the back and some brass rod on the side.

And  the last (for now) bits of river crossing kit.

Next up is this lot:

Some more T-64s and some T-80s

Some T-62s (because they are there…) and the start of my airborne force.

I still need to paint the rest of the Polish infantry and now some VDV but not sure on colour yet for the latter… There’s also some bridging kit to do… Just not sure if I need to order more first!

And finally some bits to ID… Are these both H&R models? I know the Scotia have a large base.

And what model and make is this ATG?

So still steady progress being made… I think I’ll stick with the modern stuff for a little longer as quite enjoying them.

First proper post of the year – more Poles!

I had less time over the holidays to work on stuff than planned but this last week has seen a bit of activity as I’ve pushed on with finishing and basing the next batch of Poles for my Cold War forces and finally finishing off some of the engineer/river crossing assets for my Soviets. I will have the two battalions on Polish infantry to do but they are primed ready to go.

So here we are…

First up a unit of T54Ms (I hope!) with HQ

Followed by two battalions of infantry. One lot in BMPs and the other in SKOTs.

The SKOTs (Scotia I think) are a very nice model and paint up really well.

The also needed some AA assets and another SKOT which will carry more engineers.

And on to the Soviet river crossing kit. Bridge layers.

T55s with mine rollers and dozer blades.

And an assortment of river crossing equipment.  PTS ferries (of which I have 5 more) and some what I think are BTS? Can’t ID for sure and not sure on make. There’s a nice little article on Soviet river crossing kit on Russel Phillips site: Bridging the Gap.

So there we are. Two battalions of infantry to do, more river crossing kit, two battalions of T-64s (for Sovs) and a 2S1 battalion for the Poles. Lots of other little bits to do as well…

I may have a pause though after the next basing as I want to move onto something bigger for a while. And I still to get a game in!!

And we’re back!

After many weeks of faffing and disillusionment with the whole blogging thing I seem finally to be back after the blog getting hacked last year. I’m still unsure on the actual cause. I suspect that while working on my website I tried to link to data in the blog and possibly left something vulnerable there. Either way some hacker from Turkey managed to inject loads of malware throughout the blog. Every post, page, media item was infected and despite numerous attempts to clean things it just wouldn’t go away. This kind of put me off blogging for a while as I really thought I’d lost 11 years of recording my hobby!

However, after a bit of research I finally sat down a few days ago to sort it all out. The basic process was…

  1. Export ALL posts and pages and use a decent text editor to remove all the spam links from the generated XML file
  2. Wipe the entire subdomain the blog sat in and recreate the subdomain as a separate website to the main one.
  3. Install a clean copy of WordPress and all the assorted plugins I need to keep it clean.
  4. Import the old blog.
  5. Scan the hell out of it both locally and remotely – it seems to come up clean

There are still a few issues with the media library but that is only related to old posts so I’m not too bothered and may fix it later… And some of the pages that used a multi-column formatting plugin no longer work so they will either need reformatting or moving to the new website when I get round to it…

In the meantime, to get my mojo moving again, I’ve been sorting through my Cold War microarmour and using a lot of the older WarPac kit to start off a small Polish force. I posted this on Facebook before Christmas but thought I’d drop the images in here just for completeness!

I’ve got a load more done and ready to upload but they can sit in their own new post. I’m also working on various bits of Soviet kit: ferries, bridging, dozers etc. and a pile more tanks as you can never have too many!

Fingers crossed this stays clean

And Happy New Year!
