And the rules were Legion!

Many, and I MEAN many years ago I used to play wargames with my cousin Stuart and mate Mark using all our old Airfix figures. Needless to say there was a lot of Roman vs. Ancient Briton action! Somehow I had acquired a set of rules called Legion by Al Margolis published by Fantasy Games Unlimited. I’ve no recollection of where I got them but it is likely via my local club at the time, Shrewsbury Wargames Society. I liked these rules. Percentage based and relatively simple (compared to some rules at the time (c.1980 if not earlier…) . I recalled that in melees you resolved all the individual unit combats and then rolled again for the result for the battle line. I got rid of my copy years ago and every now and then I had a hankering to play them again.

Occasionally a copy would crop up on eBay or Amazon. Usually in the States and not cheap! Then a couple of weeks ago in a Facebook sale group there was a copy for sale. $8. Bargain! Got them shipped over ($14!). Thanks to Jason Pipes for the deal.I intend to try them out soon with my 15mm figures. I’ll likely just drop the distances from inches to centimetres and double rank my infantry. The slightly shorter distances should work on a smaller table.

In other news…after a slight lull due to work and life I’m back painting the 10mm stuff. Have a load of Sudan stuff half done and have started the next Prussian 1806 battalion. How much time I’ll have over the next few weeks is moot as the kids break up tomorrow…

6mm Early Byzantines – a start

At Derby a few weeks ago I picked up a wide range of figures from Baccus with a view to putting together an Early Byzantine army for Impetus. As no one does a specific Early range for the Byzantines I was looking at a mix of Late Roman, Sassanid, Goth, Hun types to represent the army. Given the period of transition and the Eastern influences and the ‘mercenary’ nature of the Bucellarii I figured I could get away with this, especially in 6mm!

I’m still waiting for MDF bases to arrives (hopefully before next weeks postal strikes!) but thought I’d post some ‘in progress’ shots. So here are some views of the first Bucellarii based on a Sassanid Late Heavy Cavalry. They have bow, lance and part armoured horse. I would have preferred to have unarmoured horses in the second rank but Baccus are in a transition period with moving to a slightly larger horse and currently the proposed back rank would look like ponies!


The Impetus Justinian list has just been posted in draft and for that I need 4 units of Kavallarioi. These were a bit harder to source. So I’ve taken a Sassanid armoured archer and added a small shield with a bit of green stuff.


And as a lot of the images I’ve seen for Bucellarii have helmets with plumes and with cloaks I thought I ‘d see how easy it was to adapt the Sassanid Heavy Cavalry figure…


Overall I’m rather pleased with them. I think the archer shields may be a tad on the large side but at 6mm I don’t really care and once painted I’m sure they’ll look fine. I will need to do another Bucellarii unit so for that will do a mix with cloak and I’m hoping Peter at Baccus may be able to source me a suitable unarmoured horse type figure.

I’ll post better pictures once they’re all based.

First Game of Field of Glory

Well, finally played our first game today. Despite having taken down Mid-Republican Roman and Carthaginians my opponent, Lawrence, had just bought a rather lovely Seleucid army on eBay which had arrived this morning so we decided to christen it! So, Later Seleucid v. Mid-Rep Roman it was. We just went for the Starter Armies as it was our first outing for the rules. Ian was to be rules-meister and Richard observer, commentator and Seleucid advisor.

fog1_setupTo broaden my frontage and try to counter his superiority in Cavalry and LH and the Elephants. I deployed my Triarii on either side of my central legionary mass. Latin allies to right. My Cavalry to left facing all his horse and Elephants. I pushed forward as fast as I could with my Velites driving back his skirmish line.

The Allies moved to engage his medium foot on the one flank while the one Roman Cavalry BG drove off his LH archers. They went too far forward and had to carry on to avoid a threat from the Elephants who then bore down on and charged my allied Cav.

The Allied foot in the meantime engaged his Off.Sp MF, both with Troop Commanders in the front line. I rolled VERY bad, 6 dice, 1,1,2,2,3,3. TC gave me 2 re-rolls – 1,1

Passed the Cohesion test though and lived to fight again. Held them next turn but lost another base, as did he. Then in the third turn, lost another and my general. In the centre the legions plodded on and were about to charge into the pike. On my left one Cavalry BG ended up engaging both his BGs with the LH threatening the flanks while my Allied Cav spent three turns battling the Elephants to no avail either way…

And then we ran out of time!

We’d had quite a few rule discussions on the way and had my wife not been sat in the car waiting we may have managed one turn of legion v phalanx to see if things would swing the Roman way.

Discussions were mainly…

1. LI Bow in single line of 8 facing the legions. End base faces on BG, next 2 another, next 2 another. We think they only get to throw two dice as the end base is on its own so doesn’t get one and the overlap on the other side only adds one base so they stay on 1 dice. It seemed funny that just because of how my BGs lined up 2 of the 6 bases firing were discounted?

After consulting the FoG Forums we realised that 8 base firing units should really operate in 2 ranks.

2. The battle of my allied cav v the Elephants. We only had one base each in contact and in three turns nothing really happened. It seemed strange that Cavalry were little affected by the big beasts? Maybe it was just our rolling…?

And we totally missed the Cavalry disrupted when in base width of elephants rule!

We enjoyed it anyway and will play again.
