More Poles and stuff…and coming up next.

Another batch finished.

First up my Poles needed some artillery support so three batteries of 2S1s with HQ. I think these are Skytrex models. Not huge amounts of detail but clean and tidy and paint up well. HQ stand are Scotia I think.

And the first lot of T-64s off  the line. Scotia models. Nice to paint. The BMP-1Ksh is a converted BMP-1 as I’ve run out of proper ones! Couple of bit of plasticard added to the back and some brass rod on the side.

And  the last (for now) bits of river crossing kit.

Next up is this lot:

Some more T-64s and some T-80s

Some T-62s (because they are there…) and the start of my airborne force.

I still need to paint the rest of the Polish infantry and now some VDV but not sure on colour yet for the latter… There’s also some bridging kit to do… Just not sure if I need to order more first!

And finally some bits to ID… Are these both H&R models? I know the Scotia have a large base.

And what model and make is this ATG?

So still steady progress being made… I think I’ll stick with the modern stuff for a little longer as quite enjoying them.

First proper post of the year – more Poles!

I had less time over the holidays to work on stuff than planned but this last week has seen a bit of activity as I’ve pushed on with finishing and basing the next batch of Poles for my Cold War forces and finally finishing off some of the engineer/river crossing assets for my Soviets. I will have the two battalions on Polish infantry to do but they are primed ready to go.

So here we are…

First up a unit of T54Ms (I hope!) with HQ

Followed by two battalions of infantry. One lot in BMPs and the other in SKOTs.

The SKOTs (Scotia I think) are a very nice model and paint up really well.

The also needed some AA assets and another SKOT which will carry more engineers.

And on to the Soviet river crossing kit. Bridge layers.

T55s with mine rollers and dozer blades.

And an assortment of river crossing equipment.  PTS ferries (of which I have 5 more) and some what I think are BTS? Can’t ID for sure and not sure on make. There’s a nice little article on Soviet river crossing kit on Russel Phillips site: Bridging the Gap.

So there we are. Two battalions of infantry to do, more river crossing kit, two battalions of T-64s (for Sovs) and a 2S1 battalion for the Poles. Lots of other little bits to do as well…

I may have a pause though after the next basing as I want to move onto something bigger for a while. And I still to get a game in!!

Onwards!

A Modern Dilemma…

Well, not a dilemma as such, more a bit of a shock as I delved into the 1/300th lead pile…

The last week or so has seen lots of posts about the big Cold War Commander game in Grimsby. Andy M’s blog gives a good overview. I knew I had lots of unfinished stuff foir my Moderns in the attic and as I’ve been struggling on painting ANYTHING I thought I’d throw together some microarmour as it is usually quite quick to do. I have a couple of Scotia Lebeds so quite fancied doing some Soviet Naval Infantry. For this I’ll need some BTR60s and some T-55s. I’ve got some of the Skytrex T-55s but to be honest they are a bit basic. The chaps over the Cold War Commander forum pointed me some the recent T55 variants that Heroics and Ros have released. And very nice they are too! So I dug out the assorted boxes to see what I had…

First off is the half finished Brits from about two years ago:

I had just been tidying these up and basing them but the remaining ones seems to be from too many batches with different paint jobs so I may be tempted to strip and re-paint them. Sometime…

I also have the other remains of Belgian stuff and other odd NATO things…

But the bulk of everything is the WarPac stuff. Most of this came from SlugBalancer and there is more there than I remembered!

The bulk is standard Soviet stuff. Some more T-80s (I think) and lots of BMP-1s.

There are also a lot of OT types. I may not use these. There is also a chunk of BMP3s and similar which may be too ‘modern’ for what I am working on so I may pass them on as well. Lots and lots of support/engineering vehicles (a lot of which I still need to ID!) and a lot of river crossing kit that I am missing from my current Soviet forces.

I’d like to use the bulk of this for some East German or Polish units. I painted/based a lot of T-72s and T-62s ages ago and may move them to their proper WarPac place! I’d also like to paint them in a different green to the Soviets but not sure on what colour (Vallejo) to use?

And finally, in amongst all the bags of unpainted lead I found some of the recent H&R T-55AM2Bs so have a start for a Naval force!

And I might need some more MDF bases… 🙂

6mm DPM Tester

I’ve been wanting to paint some infantry to go with the pile of British armour I’m gradually painting/basing but have put it off and off as I couldn’t decide how to paint them. Various people have suggested just painting them green as they would likely be in NBC suits. Others have said that at the scale and distance they would just look green anyway! Various suggestions of a green base coat and dry brushing sand and brown. However I wanted to see how a bit more effort came out. I had a strip of figures painted a plain green and tried stippling sand, brown and black with an old brush but I wasn’t happy with the result.  So, taking a page out of Dave Hall’s book (seek out his excellent 6mm Franco-Prussian armies on his Medetian Wars blog) I took a toothpick and used that to apply the colours. First the figures were primed white, then painted Vallejo Flat Green. Then dabbed Dark Sand on arms legs and helmet, followed by Flat Earth and then a few spots of black at the junction of the sand and brown. Dark grey for gun and olive green for equipment. And Flat Flesh. The Flat Green over the white is quite bright so I applied a Vallejo Umber wash over the lot to tone it down.

Hard to really see with the pictures (poor light and phone camera) but I think they look OK. I rush the dabbing a little but will take more care on the rest to avoid large dabs!

EDIT: And as I forgot to mention and some have asked, they are Heroics and Ros Modern British, New Helmet as my Cold War stuff is aimed at mid-late eighties.

More Belgians…

A slow month but some progress in filling the gaps in my developing Belgian force. Still quite a few more bits to do but getting there… So these are the new additions:

IMAG4546GepardsIMAG4551Jagdpanzer KanoneIMAG4550M109s with HQ stand. The latter having a rough attempt at a M108 VBCL. It’s OK but was a bit rushed and the added boxes need to be more clearly defined.IMAG4548 IMAG4549And some more M75s to finish off the Reserve battalion and provide transport for engineers along with the HQ stand.IMAG4547And finally, the rear view showing the little Belgian flags they all have! 🙂IMAG4552

More to come…
