A little something to be going on with…

…or something little…

I’ve been trying to sort out my masses of microarmour and actually FINISH some! I have a LOT of British waiting to be based but no infantry. I had done a few Challenger 1s ages ago but the colour scheme is very dark with not much difference in the camo but on the table does it REALLY matter? So I finished basing them and added a command stand from a different batch (hence slightly different colours…)

IMAG4253 IMAG4254Now I have the bases I need I’ll be doing more Brits but I also wanted to get the Belgians finished so… having a LOT of infantry from a trade ages ago that looked like this:

IMAG4252I rebased them all and painted up 10x M75s so I can use these as a reserve unit. I have a few more M75s on order and still need to do some HQs but they are coming out OK:

Russians – Have I got enough now?

Well, the final batch of my Russian micro armour arrived today courtesy of Martin (aka Slug Balancer on TMP). They were, as expected, very well packed and not a single item or barrel was bent never mind damaged! Here’s a few pics:

The first lot have a pile of OT-64Cs which will be forming part of a Czech force. And a interesting selection of missiles! Some good possibilities for diorama bases there I think. Then we have a lot of BMP-1s which will either go Warpac (more likely) or as they have a seperate turret I may look at these as a base for doing BMP-1Ps? Also, ferries, BMDs and assorted odds and ends.

Transport, BMDs and T54s.

ASU-85s, and a few odd companies of armour.Overall a nice little(?) haul and now I need a little time to plan what to do with it all!

The following shows what assorted Soviet kit I have waiting to be dealt with! You can also see the pile of bags of unpainted kit! Apart from some T-64s that is mostly assorted recce stuff and models to add to HQ stands and specials. So, what is the plan? To be honest I’m not 100% sure. Having done a lot of T-80s recently and with at least four battalions of T-64s to do I’m thinking of moving my T-72s and T-62s to Warpac forces and then using the bulk of this lot (the older kit and APCs, OTs) to provide the Mech and Motor stuff. Some of the OT models are quite nice. The T-54s may get shipped to the Middle East in ’73 though!

There’s kit there as well to do airborne.

I really must get round to the NATO stuff soon!

WIP – Just a few more waffer thin T-80s!

I had planned to move onto something different for a week or two just to give myself a break  from the micro armour so I don’t burn out. But having taken delivery of the large batch of T-64s et al I was quite taken with the camo pattern on a batch T-80Us so fancied basing them up and also doing another batch of D-30s. This time mounted correctly!

The base models came nicely packaged and neatly painted with a sand based camo with darker brown and black patterns:

I did my usual Vallejo Sepia Wash but using the brush to lift as much as possible off the main areas so as not to darken the model too much. Then Pale Sand highlight, gel pen for markings and a mid brown for mud etc.  Usual basing.

T-80Us – new

I used the BTR-80 command vehicle to go with the tenth model for the HQ:

T-80U HQ

And here is the lot along with the D30s:

T-80Us and D-30s

The D-30s form another battery and this lot are mounted on the stands correctly. I do understand that the 120 degree mount allows all round firing but in a deployed position I think they would always choose the optimum setup:

I quite enjoyed doing these – suppose I’m getting used to them! Next up are some 15mm Roman-British for Dux.

WIP – Even more Soviets!

You can never have too many!

Finally finished off the basing of my T-80s and BMP-2s along with the support carriers and HQ bases for the latter, and the final HQ for the T-80s using a spare model from the recent mass of lead acquired!

BMP-2s and T-80s with HQs
The three BMP-2 battalions with HQs
Three battalions of T-80s. Three different models. Front row H&R. Rest are Scotia
T-80 HQ
T-80 HQ
T-80 HQ but with a BMP-2 so it could double up
All the BMP-2s are Heroics and Ros. Nice little models
The lovely little H&R T-80 ERA
You can’t beat a lot of Russian tanks!

I’m quite pleased to get this lot done. It means I can finally fill in some more red boxes on the Painting Master Plan. I still have the infantry to do for these and more artillery assets. And the T-64s. And the various river crossing units… But I think I may paint something different next as I feel I need a change to avoid burnout!

WIP – More Soviets

I had intended finishing off the pile of Soviet AFVs and APCs that needed basing before I posted the results but inevitably I realised I needed more little bits to add to them to make up ‘proper’ units (i.e. the BTRs and BMPs for the support squads). So I thought I’d do a quick progress report.

I painted most of these last year and had only got so far as adding the ‘sand’ to the base. I had done three battalions of T-80s, three of BTR-70s and three of BMP-2s. Two of the T-80 battalions are Scotia but everything else is Heroics and Ros. The T-80 ERA being a particularly fine model.

These are the BMPs still in their ‘to be finished’ state:

Heroics and Ros BMP-2s
Heroics and Ros BMP-2s

I’ve completed the three battalions of T-80s. A mix of Scotia and H&R (rear three rows) with two of the BTR battalions in the middle and my recently acquired Dark Ream SF force to the fore! Bar some tufts/clump foliage these are done:

Scotia and H&R T-80s and H&R BTR-70s

As I said, the H&R T-80 ERA is a really nice crisp model:

Heroics and Ros T-80 ERA

I had to add/paint an extra BTR-70 unit along with two models for each unit to carry the support squads:

Extra BTR-70s

And the command stands are partly done basing:

BTR HQs and extra BTR-70s

And finally, I’ve decided to do all my artillery assets on 40×40 bases so this is the first as a tester:

122mm D-30
122mm D-30

I know in CWC they are off-table but I like doing the bases!

So there we go. I’ll be ordering some T-64 ERA to go with these and maybe another lot of the H&R T-80s. Another lot of BMP-2s as well although from recent comments I think I need some BMP-1s as well.

I’ve also started the engineering and bridging assets. I seem to have two types in the my lead pile:

Bridging units. What types?

I’m not entirely sure what is what. I think one is H&R and one Skytrex? The top I’m pretty sure is Soviet, the bottom I’m less so.

So there we go. I’m not entirely sure why I did all these. I already have over 10,000pts worth of Soviets for CWC! I think I just wanted to move the date range to late ’80s as all the other stuff is T-72/T-62… Still, more Russians is always a good thing!
