Scales I wargame

A Modern Dilemma…

Well, not a dilemma as such, more a bit of a shock as I delved into the 1/300th lead pile…

The last week or so has seen lots of posts about the big Cold War Commander game in Grimsby. Andy M’s blog gives a good overview. I knew I had lots of unfinished stuff foir my Moderns in the attic and as I’ve been struggling on painting ANYTHING I thought I’d throw together some microarmour as it is usually quite quick to do. I have a couple of Scotia Lebeds so quite fancied doing some Soviet Naval Infantry. For this I’ll need some BTR60s and some T-55s. I’ve got some of the Skytrex T-55s but to be honest they are a bit basic. The chaps over the Cold War Commander forum pointed me some the recent T55 variants that Heroics and Ros have released. And very nice they are too! So I dug out the assorted boxes to see what I had…

First off is the half finished Brits from about two years ago:

I had just been tidying these up and basing them but the remaining ones seems to be from too many batches with different paint jobs so I may be tempted to strip and re-paint them. Sometime…

I also have the other remains of Belgian stuff and other odd NATO things…

But the bulk of everything is the WarPac stuff. Most of this came from SlugBalancer and there is more there than I remembered!

The bulk is standard Soviet stuff. Some more T-80s (I think) and lots of BMP-1s.

There are also a lot of OT types. I may not use these. There is also a chunk of BMP3s and similar which may be too ‘modern’ for what I am working on so I may pass them on as well. Lots and lots of support/engineering vehicles (a lot of which I still need to ID!) and a lot of river crossing kit that I am missing from my current Soviet forces.

I’d like to use the bulk of this for some East German or Polish units. I painted/based a lot of T-72s and T-62s ages ago and may move them to their proper WarPac place! I’d also like to paint them in a different green to the Soviets but not sure on what colour (Vallejo) to use?

And finally, in amongst all the bags of unpainted lead I found some of the recent H&R T-55AM2Bs so have a start for a Naval force!

And I might need some more MDF bases… 🙂

A few more ACW…

I’ve been struggling to get back into painting etc. since the break imposed by the school holidays. Border Reiver, although am enjoyable day, didn’t provide me with the boost I needed so the painting brush has been idle…

However, the inestimable Essex Boy has recently been sorting through an acquired lead pile and ID’d a number of Minifigs 2nd Gen 15mm ACW figures. Some Union, some CSA, infantry and cavalry:

The paintjob was quite basic and as I’d implied that I was going to strip them EB just dropped them in bags to post. When they arrived quite a few were chipped but the CSA stuff actually still looked mostly OK. The Union stuff looked a little rougher and I wasn’t keen on the blue used… So I thought I’d touch up the CSA stuff. Most just needed a highlight adding to the chipped surfaces and I then applied a thinned GW Agrax Earthshade and based them up. Ten new stands.

It was nice to complete something but I’ve no idea what to do next. I quite liked the cavalry that EB sent as well:

These look to be Frontier Miniatures but are unfortunately lacking horses and as Frontier seem to have disappeared I think these figures will never get used. So…still no idea what to so next!

A Mahdist addition to the force…

After a bit of a delay I’ve finally finished the next batch of Mahdists for my 10mm Sudan project. Again, I have adapted Dave Docherty’s excellent approach to speeding up the process. A batch of shaved head chaps were done using the same technique as the Fuzzy Wuzzies detailed earlier. This post will detail the later Mahdists and the approach used.

As these chaps are predominantly dressed in white(ish) colours the whole batch was spray undercoated in white (Halfords Primer)The flesh areas were then painted in Vallejo Flat EarthShields painted a variety of browns and a few red bits added for contrastThen a thinned Vallejo Sepia WashAs the wash stained the white more than I planned I went over them highlighting with a mix of ivory and off whiteAnd final details and bases paintedAnd finally the flags painted. Text was done with a white gel pen. Only slight issue with this was when it came time to varnish where one flag smudged… And on to basing…

Having done a couple of command stands as well I think I have enough for a small game. Possibly with The Men Who Would be Kings. Possibly something else. Either way I thought I’d get some of desert tiles out and parade the troops!

What to paint next? I’ve got the next lot of 10mm 1806 Prussians lined up so maybe them. Or I might do some more Sudan. Quite enjoying these. 10mm can be quite quick to paint and looks excellent. Nice to finally get a project moving…

A Warm Fuzzy (Wuzzy) Feeling…

I’m still painting random stuff from my lead pile. With no fixed plan other than Ayton next year (and tradition precludes painting anything for that until at least February!) I’ve been painting what takes my fancy. So having painted some Sudan Brits I thought I needed some opposition. I spent a little time Googling for painting ideas for Fuzzy Wuzzies (Beja) and found this excellent blog post Painting Your Horde which I’ve only just spotted is by Dave Docherty on his One Man and his Brushes blog. It’s a good process for painting up lots of native types quite quickly so I thought I’d adapt it to 10mm! All colours are Vallejo Model Colour unless specified otherwise.

Step 1. Primer. Army Painter. Leather Brown Spray. Missed bits filled in with Flat Earth.Step 2. Hair and spears/swords painted black.Step 3. Paint all the robes a variety of suitable colours. I went for Ivory, Pale Sand, White, Dark Sand and German Camo Pale Brown. And spear shafts Mahogany Brown.Step 4. Wash. Vallejo Sepia Wash thinned with W&N Flow Improver.Step 5. Re-highlight cloth with same colour. Dry brush a few shields with Flat Earth and Khaki for a bit of variety. Dark Grey highlight on hair. Oily steel for metal bits. And Crafters Acrylic Country Maple for the bases.Step 6. Basing. I’m sticking with tablet MDF. The Brits are on 25x20mm but I thought that would be too small for the (hopefully!) lots of native bases I will have so I thought 50x25mm would be better for the bulk of them and then a few 25x25mm for command stands and odd bases.And I’ve tried to create the impression of a tight front rank and then thinning a little towards the back.And finally fine ballast added and painted with the Country Maple, highlighted with Antique White and some static Burnt Grass applied. A couple of rocks were added and a few tufts but not much as I don’t want to make it too grassy!So there we have it. The first batch of Fuzzies! There seemed a lot when I was painting them but when based they don’t looks as many! Here they are on the terrain boards I have and facing some of the Brits I’m quite pleased with them and will adapt Dave’s technique for the Madhists as well. This should give me enough to try out The Men Who Would Be Kings.

I’ve got the next lot of 1806 Prussians primed and ready to go and have started on the RSM Altefritzenburgers. Just need to keep the momentum going!

Some more 10mm…

After the big tidy up the other week I’ve finally cleared a couple of things in the pile. A while back I acquired some Sudan Brits from Martin (Slugbalancer). Neatly painted I just applied a wash and based them after painting a few more to make up a full unit. He then most kindly sent me some more! Again, wash required, extras to paint, and then base.
This now gives me two units! Slow progress but getting there…And then the Curse of Burt strikes! Re-basing! The 10mm Lancer Prussians I painted and based a few weeks ago I decided just weren’t right. Four 6 figures bases, although quick to paint, just didn’t look like a unit to me. And when in line the FLAGS WERE NOT IN THE MIDDLE!!!

So, after consulting the Goat (Simon) I decided that a DBN compatible 40mm base was the answer. Now I thought this was just a quick rebase as I had it in my head the first lot were on 30mm bases so it was just a matter of re-arranging them. But they were on 25mm! And to get the required 12 figures on a 40mm base I had to paint another 12… but I think it was worth it…

The flags are printed from Warflag.com. I might try and stick a bit in the top for a finial as the poles are a little short for the size of flag I want…

So that is the 1st Battalion Muffling regiment. Just need to do the second now!

And finally the latest rule arrival is the 2nd Edition of Brigade Fire and Fury. Only had a couple of read throughs but the changes look interesting, adding a little more detail to unit classifications, some streamlining of mechanisms, diagrams and examples seem clearer, and a force generator added. Looking forward to trying them.

Something new – sort of…

I was going to keep this as a secret project just in case, as has happened before, it come to nought…

I’ve always wanted to do 1806 Prussians. I tried starting in 6mm, had some French painted, but never got round to the Prussians. And then sold them… I’ve contemplated 28mm but too expensive. I’ve since decide that 6mm is no good for my eyes. And 15mm I would just spend too long painting especially as I’d want to go the AB route…

And the last few weeks I’ve been following the progress of Richard Phillips on various Facebook groups as he progresses rapidly through an 1806/9 Saxon project in 10mm. So I thought, what the hell, a few samples can’t hurt…

Now he is using Magister Militum 10mm and I quite like them but I also spotted the Lancer Miniatures range for the period. I quite like the infantry but am a little reserved about the cavalry. I’ll paint a few and see… So I ordered a pack of Prussian musketeers and command and painted 4 bases of 6. Quickly. Roughly two hours from undercoated to done. They could be a little neater in places and I’ll likely spend more time on the others but with the purpose of getting units done quickly they will do…

I’m broadly planning on using General d’Armee and four bases will form a standard unit. And I’m looking at the OOB for Saalfeld so get to paint Fusiliers and Saxons as well.

We shall see what happens but I only really intend to buy a couple of units at a time and paint them before ordering more. And I still need to find the right flags!

Ayton 2017 – Day 2

And so we come to Day 2. The big  game! Western Crusaders and Eastern types assaulting a castle/village/church complex. Six players on our side versus four on the other, with a couple of guns mounted in the castle facing either way. Each player has 42 points to split into two retinues. However, each turn you could only activate one of them. On the first day the activation sequence with four players was controlled by cards. This time all one side went, but as said, only one of your retinues per turn. Unfortunately, Richie was unable to attend Day 2 so myself and Dave Hall took it turns controlling his force depending on how busy we were with our own.

I split my force into a small retinue (two yeoman, two bidowers and one lot of mounted) which along with all Richie’s force were facing Bob defending the village. My main retinue (sergeants, bows etc.) joined Dave in attacking Ken and then the castle. Despite the losses on Day 1 I still chose a couple of Boasts! I went for my arrows are deadlier than my spears, and issuing a challenge. As my leader had died the day before I got to roll for two new ones and got a Great Leader and a Lionheart! So I reckoned a duel would be in order…

Let battle commence!

All was quiet in the monastery. Little did they know what was to come…
My retinues arrayed for battle!
The enemy await.
First blood went to Richie as Bob had the first of many rotten rolls with his expert archers fleeing after their first casualty!
This was my fast moving retinue on the left. This was pretty well as far as it got all game!
More bowmen brought to plug the gap.
While nearby other bowmen opened up on the approaching troops in the open. And again, the dice were not good. Three times these expert bowmen fired without causing a single casualty!
Men at arms prepare to assault the wall. The second lot of bowmen had already been pushed back and now sergeants awaited the attack.
Meanwhile, to the right, mine and Dave’s Normans began to attack Ken’s French!
As my missile troops picked off casualties my tough guys rushed to the attack.
Dave pushed forward vigorously and caused many casualties. He then challenged the enemy leader and died for his trouble!

My missile troops continued to harass the enemy despite losing men to the cannon in the castle and my sergeants prepare to advance.
Meanwhile Richie’s troops continue to contest the the wall.
Now much reduced after many melees my men at arms prepare to fight again as their sergeants rush to support them.
Kens much reduced forces prepare to face fresh troops.
Having exhausted his first retinue Richie’s second retinue attacks as Bob brings up his remaining troops to hold the line.
My sergeants pile in and begin to wipe out the remaining units.
Finally the Brotherhood charge forward to deliver the coup de gras!
While mine and Dave’s remaining sergeants began to assault the castle walls.
And seeing Ken’s remaining Lord the Brotherhood charged forward and challenged him to combat. This was rather ineffective…. so they charged and drove them back…
The fight for the walls continues.
And the Brotherhood finally ride down Ken’s Lord!

And at that point Gary called it a day! Although we had not taken the castle we had killed enough of the enemy to force a surrender. And for once my dice had been good! I had wiped out at least five units, killed a Lord and achieved my two boasts! A great turnaround after the dire result of Day 1! But the dice had served me well and fortunately for me Bob suffered badly with his which gave me and Dave freedom to pile into Ken! All in all a good game. Great fun and nice to win!

Ayton 2017 – Day 1

And so our 7th Ayton has come and gone. And a great weekend it was yet again. This year, as you will know if you have followed the last few posts, was to be Lion Rampant. Gary Phillips took on the onerous task of herding us all together to fight it out and produced an excellent set of games! It’s not easy setting up scenarios to fit in timescales (2 games on day 1 and 1 big game on day 2), as  I’m sure Henry will attest! And especially with the weird and wonderful troops our lot can come up with! But Gary did a fine job. 

The basic background to the games was:

Somewhere in the Med, sometime during the Crusades . . . .
Sir Geoffrey the Indolent is on to a nice little earner. He has established a little fiefdom right on the main sailing route to the Levant. Crusaders on the way out are charged extortionately for food and board, even more on the way back! As a result, Sir Geoffrey has built up a significant pile of treasure from the Crusades, whilst maintaining a reign of terror over the local populace. He has a number of minor nobles to enforce this rule of law.
The Western Crusaders have had enough. A number of nobles have decided to remove Sir Geoffrey and have launched a punitive expedition. They want him removed and they want to dismantle his little empire and recover their treasures.
The Eastern Hordes have seen the Crusaders take their treasures and set up an outpost which threatens their shores. They want the treasures back, so have launched a raid – the objective: loot, burn and kill indiscriminately. If they destroy enough, there will be nothing for the Crusaders to defend. A renegade band of Teutonic Knights see their cause as a way to get one over on the Westerners and have joined their cause, albeit they will arrive late . . . .
Meanwhile, all is not well in the House of Geoffrey. Whilst his nobles wish to preserve the island paradise, some are not keen on seeing Sir Geoffrey prosper. They are more interested in the locals and whist they don’t want it destroyed, they won’t mind if Sir Geoffrey falls to the invaders.
Others of course have had their pockets lined and will defend the current set-up to the last. They are also happy to perform a little pillaging of the local populace and treasures on their own account. Cue chaos . . . . .

I, along with Dave Hall and Richie, formed the Western Crusader contingent as we all had broadly late C11th forces. My first game saw myself and Richie converging on a wagon train guarded by Ken and Gary. Each wagon had a unit attached to it that could defend but not abandon them to go fight. Rolling for my leader (Prior Donovan) he was ‘vulnerable’ so this looked like it may be his last campaign leading the Brotherhood of the Swan into battle!

…and the wagons rolled on with little intervention from me! However, Richie was fighting hard on the other side of the table but not doing that well…

I managed to form schiltron and drove off his chaps three times.
I finally got some movement as my crossbows started hitting the wagons
As Richie started to suffer losses the wagons moved on but my troops finally started to close in.
Unfortunately, The Brotherhood were clearly feeling a little vulnerable so still refused to move…
There then followed a series of melees as my sergeants held firm to drive off Ken’s. However, they still remained a threat and stop my advance in that area.
Meanwhile I finally managed to make some attacks on the wagons but failed to destroy the opposition and capture them…
And as there was no point in just sitting there my sergeants attacked Ken’s and drove them off!
Although my unit of sergeants looked set for another attempt on the wagons they ended up failing a Courage test and fleeing the table!
This left space for my Men at Arms to try as well and despite repeated battles with several units and getting shot to bits the failed to grab a wagon!

And finally failed a Rally and fled!
And in the final turn Richie’s remaining mounted troops captured the lead wagon!

And that was it. With Richie’s losses and my last two units dying we were deemed to have failed and were forced from the field allowing the wagons through. I’d misheard the Glory Points instructions and thought we HAD to pick three. And I failed all mine, scored no other victory points and so ended the game on -3. Much to the amusement of everyone there…

After a pleasant light lunch we resumed for Game 2. This time the Western Crusaders, myself, Dave Hall and Richie were assaulting a town with the intent of capturing a couple of guns that would then not be available to the defenders in the big game. The opposition was Gary and Ken on the flanks, and defending the town was the resolute Essex Boy (Iain Burt)! Dave looked at the cannon pointing down the road and the bows and crossbows massed in the buildings either side and decided to set up on the right flank! I decided that charging up the road with glorious abandon would be fun so lined up to face Iain which Richie deployed on the left (where another cannon was placed) and faced Gary.

But were driven off… as were the sergeants.
And both failed Courage tests badly and fled the field!
The remaining sergeants charged towards the gun. They had already taken casualties from this as Iain took an early shot before limbering and attempting to run…
I managed to catch them and drive them back but as not battered they took the gun with them…
And my guys got caught in the flank…
And driven back they failed their Rally and fled!
Meanwhile Dave has been battling Ken on the right but with horrendous activation rolls was making little progress and this allowed Ken to move in support of the centre.
It was now time for the cavalry! Taking casualties on the way in they battled valiantly.
The Brotherhood charged in support but their God was not with them…
And driven back they faced more arrows!
Finally Brother Donovan, grasping the sacred Banner of the Swan, died under a hail of arrows…
…and finally only the crossbows remained.
Although they tried to harry the retreat it was to no avail. The cannon escaped and the battle was lost…

Dave had rotten dice the whole game and could only get half his force into action. Richie, over on my left, got badly pummelled by Gary’s mounted troops and although he fought back well he too could not get his remaining troops into the fray…

I had rather poor dice. But it was a strong position to assail and Iain sat there and revelled in shooting hell out of me on the way in. It’s quite hard to coordinate an attack as you can get everything forward and ready and then have some bad rolls that leaves them vulnerable… especially to Expert Bow! But Iain did not revel in his good fortune and only sniggered and danced a jig on most rather than all good rolls… 🙂

Although I managed to score some Glory Points (2) I had again taken and failed three boasts…. so my total for the day saw me on -4! But everyone was sympathetic to my misfortune and were supportive and hardly ever mentioned it… especially Peeler…. Gits! 

So that was Day 1. Not exactly a resounding success for my troops but a good laugh which is the important thing. Not the points. No one cares about the points… Or mentions them…again…and again…and again…

T’was the night before Ayton. Again!

Tomorrow I’ll heading down to Ayton for what will be our 7th year! This year we are playing a large Lion Rampant game so I have mostly been painting Normans! And mostly over the last month as inevitably I left it all late! 🙂 The last few days have seen me rattling off 12 archers, 12 yeoman and 12 mounted chaps!

So we have 6 Conquest plastic Normans: 12 Conquest plastics done as yeoman and with round shields as a sort of local force: And 12 Conquest plastic archers: And finally, the Brotherhood of the Swan! Three Perry Hospitaler command and three Conquest plastics. I intend to pick up three more Perry’s to make these a full unit. And Brother Donovan carrying the sacred banner!

Not bad for a week’s work! I’d hoped to get the force to the 42 points we need for Day Two but it was just too much. The remaining figures from the boxes will go to make some bidowers and once I have the Perrys, another mounted unit. So the force for Ayton is: Needless to say there will be a full report after the weekend! Really looking forward to it!

As Ayton looms…

…I’m finally cracking on with the figures needed. To add to the crossbowmen I finished a few weeks ago I’ve added 12 more Foot Sergeants (though they may end up as Yeoman!) and 6 Foot Men at Arms. All are Conquest Normans. And as I’m retaining the Savage Swans theme the tough chaps get the usual colour scheme! I’ve got another 12 foot and 6 mounted half done. Hope to get them finished by Friday. Then may attempt some more!

Ayton always provides a good focus for painting. If only I could realise that a few weeks earlier….
