If you trawl back through the 6mm stuff on here you will find me recreating my 28mm C18th Imagination in 6mm. Project stalling. Realising it was madness. Selling what I had. Then several years later deciding that space might dictate a return to 6mm and my trading a load of 10mm Sudan stuff to reacquire what I had sold… As you do…
However, the new owner (Paul) had added quite a bit. Some be had painted very nicely himself, some had been an equally nicely painted commission, and there was a lot of broadly ‘French’ Baccus stuff that was rather basically painted, a bit battered, and not really in keeping with everything else…
So for reference here is a selection of my original stuff, Paul’s stuff, Paul’s stuff revamped by me, and new stuff by me…

And at some point 12-18 months ago I moved on to other things and the project has sat in several RUBs. I’d also got a box of unpainted stuff, a large part of which is Adler cavalry as I prefer those over the Baccus. But recently, with the prospect of time to play some games on my small 4×4 table, it became obvious that playing a bigger battle would need a smaller scale… So the 6mm came back to the fore.
The quick and easy win for some progress was to try and refurbish some of the less well painted stuff and rebase as it was all currently on 40×20 or 40×30 bases…

First option was just to slap a wash over them all and see what that did. I picked a red unit and a white unit and (L-R) applied Nuln Oil, Army Painter Dark Tone, and W&N Nut Brown ink. Conclusion was that the Strong Tone gave the desired increase in contrast.

It’s a bit hard to see in the pics but it made a difference. The Nut Brown seemed too pink (on the white) and the Nuln just not enough… So flag poles were replaced with wire and a couple of units started. I base all mine on 60×30 with a couple of figures to the rear and an officer out front.

Because I’m daft I paint all my own flags… Mainly because the initial units were for my ImagiNation so made up anyway.

There are quite a few bases to be refurbished. Mostly in white coats but quite a few red. And not enough command figures to do all new units as needed. But I do have a full bag of command strips courtesy of that nice Mr Berry.

So I’ve decided the white coats are French and I’ve been combing the references for units that match the facing but also have flags that aren’t bloody stupid to attempt in 6mm. And to contradict that, the red coats will be Swiss with their bloody curvy flags! I’ve already done all six Irish regiments…
So here are the 4 units completed so far plus a gun and crew I had that needed rebasing. I quite pleased with the overall look.

So there we are. Unbasing the remaining ones will take a while and will need a lot of extra command painting so I might need a plan. And I do need to paint more cavalry.
And play a game…
Great post and great progress. Playing a game, when you have enough ready, is to be encouraged!
Very nice!
It’s been good following this project in “real time” over the last couple of weeks.
Very nice work, and inspiring. You make me want to return to my 6mm GNW armies, which are sadly 1000 miles away.
