Dark Deeds in the Convent

Having decided quite late on to attend Partizan after all I dropped Dave H a message to see if he was available both for a game on the Saturday and to put me up for the night. Fortunately he was. Drove down Saturday with wife and was dropped off as she was continuing south to visit her brother. Then she spent an hour stranded on the A1 waiting for the AA as our car died big time… It’s now been repatriated to The North and awaits the garage announcing The Damage… We at least have a hire car until tomorrow… But enough of that and on to the game…

Dave always puts on a great looking table. Everything is spot on. It all ties in and it looks great. This was the table:

The Plot: an ambassador from Braunschweig (Duke and Duchess) , his Aides, and guards are residing at a convent in Medetia awaiting the Medetian diplomats with the aim of forming an alliance against Altefritzenburg. Agents heard of this and Die Meuchelmörder-Gilde von Altefritzenburg were dispatched to kill the Duke! His death while in the care of Medetia would cause a major diplomatic incident and scupper any plans for an alliance. Recruiting some local thugs to provide a distraction the assassins prepared for the attack!

Early in the the morning the Duke and is party have retired to the convent gardens when shots are heard to the south and the attack begins!

The guards rush to protect the Duke but as more thugs appear the Duke is trapped in the gardens! And the first of the assassins appear from the shadows. Meanwhile the rest of the guards are summoned from their quarters but seem to take ages to appear! And in the grounds the thugs are held back by guards, servants, and annoyed nuns!

But as the guards finally appear and run to the Duke’s aid the ever increasing numbers of assassins begin to take casualties. The Dukes aides fight valiantly and three of the four would fall to the knives of the assassins. But trapped in the garden the Duke and Duchess draw their surviving guards around them and prepare for a last stand!

But the fight is valiant and assassins fall! The party are finally pushed back to the steps to face a terrible twist! A servant girl who stayed close to the party while others panicked sudden threw off her disguise and was revealed as blond haired assassin! The final battle had come!

But the assassins failed! The Duke’s Guard Captain and last aide fought valiantly and slew the attackers. The Duke was safe but at a terrible cost.

And the final two assassins, held at bay by the guards, got a good talking to from the Mother Superior before retiring back into the shadows and returning to Altefritzenburg to bring new of the failed attempt. Braunschweig and Medetia were joining forces and Altefritzenburg was at risk!

And that was a great game. It gave me chance to get my Midlam Miniatures assassins and nuns on the table as well as a few of the 17th century figures I’ve painted over the last 18 months. And Dave’s terrain is always a joy to play on. He also provided the Duke’s guards and the Medetian guards. Rules used were Legends of the High Seas with a few tweaks.

We didn’t have fixed reloads for muskets etc. Figures were marked when they fired and next time they rolled to see if the were loaded. 4+ needed. This kept is simple and added a degree of the unknown when firing or facing fire. My shooting wasn’t as deadly as our last game but I did get off a few very good shots! Assassins were stealthy so if within an inch of cover you had to roll to spot them. Servants and nuns were mover with a direction dice but if attacked or very close to an enemy figure could roll a courage test to see if they took umbrage at the intrusion in their convent and set upon the attacker!

Thanks again to Dave (and Colleen) for the game and hospitality.
