One of my favourite reads of last year was the books in the Alatriste series by Arturo Perez-Reverte. Saw the film ages ago (and still watch it about once a year) but took a while to get round to the books. There are currently six in English with two more yet to be translated…and that looking rather unlikely…
Anyway… While trawling eBay I came across some 3D prints of duellists. Although I’m not a huge fan of 3D/plastic I thought these looked nice so dropped an order in. They came with all supports left on which was a total faff to remove but at least it protected them in the post. The swords are a little thin and I pondered replacing with pins but it’s not something I’m confident doing, the hands are quite slim anyway, and the swords seemed quite bendy so hopefully they will survive.

And as these figures looked suitably Alatriste like I thought it would be good to paint them as such and use the book covers as inspiration. Six books. Two of the outfits are quite similar and the pirate one didn’t suit the figures. So that gave me four to start. For the fifth I Googled other covers and one from a Russian edition rather appealed.

So that was the plan and today I finished the five figures. Based on thin MDF with steel paper on the bottom so I could shape them and keep them small, I’d have preferred a metal base for weight but the thrusting figure bases were a little long for a washer…

Quite pleased with them. And having just taken delivery of the excellent new Musketeer figures from Northstar I suspect the C17th is going to see a little activity soon.

So there we have it…
