Altefritzenburg Militia!

I’ve wanted to do a militia unit for a while. No clue where the idea came from. Possibly just saw some of the figure and thought what the hell! So finally got round to them… Started last month though I’ve had all the figures for a couple of years.

Figures are a mix of Crann Tara, Minden, and Fife and Drum. All excellent figures. I wanted a bulk of what were clearly armed civilians and then a few more ‘regular’ guys. Veterans from regiments in all or part of their old uniforms.

So here is the completed unit…

On either flank are some seasoned veterans, one from the jaegers and another redcoated Hanoverian who retired to Alterfritzenburg. And in the rear ranks are a couple of stalwart townsmen armed with pistols to encourage forward momentum!

And when the militia march out the townsfolk (a few of the many…) turn out to watch…

Flag was done in my usual way. Print out a rough template and then paint over. Though this one started without the shield and scroll.

Quite pleased with them. No idea when I’ll get them on the table and in a game…I’ve still got a mounted officer/command stand to do.The painting is a little loose in places but at normal distance the effect is fine. I’m quiet pleased with the flesh I do now:

Basecoat of Flat Flesh
Gulliman Flesh Contrast
Re-highlight with flat Flesh
Highlight with Pale Flesh
Bit of thin dark red on the lower lip
Reikland Fleshshade

Used the same on a few Foundry pirate/character figures recently as well.

Hopefully get a few more posts done on the blog this year. I was very remiss in 2025…

  1. The militia look lovely, mate. I’ve no doubt they’ll embarrass the regulars whenever they appear.

The pirates are splendid fellow. You’ve excelled with the brush again, and nice choice of colours.
